Dartmoor Vale 2012
The Dartmoor Vale races will be held this year on 21st October, in association with Sibelco UK. The start and finish will be at the East Gold Works, Newton Road, Newton Abbot. This is opposite the Newton Abbot Racecourse and next to Tesco.
The event includes a marathon, a half marathon and a 10 kilometre race and is now in its ninth year. It is expected that the number of entrants will at least equal those of last year.
Entries are now being accepted from keen runners from any part of the country and beyond. The three races are:
Full marathon, 26.2 miles.
Half marathon, 13.1 miles.
10 kilometre race.
The routes for the marathon and the half marathon take runners out on the roads of the Teign Valley to Chudleigh and back down the leafy country lanes alongside Ugbrooke Park.
The total number of entrants will be limited to 1000. This includes 200 for the marathon, 400 for the half marathon and 400 for the 10k. As last year, we will not have a headline charity but have told charities that they can register their own teams who will raise sponsorship and we will be fund matching.
Fund raising is an essential part of the Dartmoor Vale Races, with runners raising significant sums for charities each year. More than £80 000 has been raised for charities over eight years and a over £25 000 raised by runners for their own charitable causes.
We will not be accepting entries for the races on the day.
The closing date for entries is Friday October 7.

Words from the Rotary President
We are really looking forward to our marathon on 21st October this year.
This will be the tenth year that we have put on the event, and we intend to build on the experiences we have gained, and make this an even more memorable event. For the first time we are planning to use 'CHIP' timing to ensure that every runner’s time over the course is more accurately recorded.
In 2010 we changed to a new site to host the start and finish of the event, and we are grateful to Sibelco for generously supporting us by providing the facility again.
We are also grateful to our Race Organiser Brian Harding, Race Director Mike Swift, other Rotary Clubs and various voluntary organisations and friends, without whom it would not be possible to stage the event. A special mention for a group called 'Fit Two Run' who looked after the catering for last year’s event to raise funds for the charity 'Children with Cancer'.
We have analysed the feedback we received following last year’s event, most of which was very positive, and we have addressed the issues that were identified, and are confident that this year’s event will be the best yet.
The money raised for the charities was also exceptional and with gift aid and moneys collected directly by runners for their charities we calculate the total charitable benefit was around £19,000. One local charity described the event as 'a wonderful opportunity to fund raise'.
(By the way please do encourage your sponsors to agree to gift aid their sponsorship. This gives a tremendous boost to their pledges)
Economic times have changed a bit since last year and the need for charitable giving is even greater. So please if you are an existing runner try to get as much sponsorship as possible. Old hands will know that we aim to match your fundraising up to 100% to double the value of your efforts. So start training and collecting now for 21st October 2012.
New to our marathon? Please find details elsewhere on this web page about joining the event and get out your running shoes! We have a great route, run in the shadow of Dartmoor, not too challenging - but with some inclines and descents to try your stamina and resolve. So if you are up for a challenge and would like to raise money for a good cause or just be at your personal best - please enrol now and start your preparations.
Finally to new runners and our faithful regulars, have a great day out - we will!
